John 5: 25-29

25 Truly, truly, I say to you, a time is coming and even now has arrived, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; 27 and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not be amazed at this; for a time is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, 29 and will come out: those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the bad deeds to a resurrection of judgment.

Here Jesus gives some foreshadowing about his second coming and how it will impact both the living and the dead. He says that the dead will rise and be separated according to deeds they did while living. Jesus drives this point home because certain sects around at this time, such as the Sadducees, did not believe in the resurrection.

The writer at Dailyverse.com says this about these verses: "Jesus let them know that the Father had committed the judgement of humanity into His hands. Indeed, God has appointed a day in which to judge the inhabitants of earth, in righteousness... and humanity will be judged by the Man Whom God appointed - i.e. Jesus Christ the Righteous. And the undeniable proof that He is the appointed One, would be His resurrection from the dead."
