Matthew 24: 26-27

26 So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. 27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

This is a very powerful warning from Christ about one of the ways that people will try to deceive believers in the end times. He warns us about false prophets and false messiahs and he is telling us that these bad actors will be humans just like us.

However, for a testament to the power of his appearance at the second coming, Christ gives us the powerful image of a lightning strike that instead of being vertical starts in the east and flashes across the entire sky. Anyone who has been at the beach or somewhere with a wide horizon during a storm has seen something like this, how a powerful lightning storm can light up the whole sky.

This is how powerful Christ is telling us his reappearance on earth will be, that it will be of epic proportions and so dramatic and over-awing that there will be no mistake that we are seeing the return of Christ the King. He tells us this so that we will not be taken in by human actors posing as gods, who present themselves as the Messiah simply by declaring it. Christ wants to drive home to us that the event of his return will be filled with supernatural happenings such as described in Revelation, to the point that there will be no confusing the return of Jesus Christ with the utterings of a mortal con-man.
