Mark 13:22-23

22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

These verses cause us to contemplate a scary reality; that part of what is predicted in the end times is that people will try to impersonate Jesus Christ and claim to be him. Verse 23 is a testimony to Christ's love for us that he came to earth and experienced tremendous suffering not only to save us, but also to warn of us what would transpire long after he ascended back up to heaven after his resurrection.

The writer at bibleref.com explains verse 22 by saying, "The last part of this verse has been misinterpreted to say that false teachers will convince Christians that they are Jesus, and the Christians will lose their salvation. What the verse actually means is that these false Christs will be so convincing that believers would be deceived if not for the truth Jesus places in their hearts."

And Matthew 24: 24-27 tells us, 2For false christs and false prophets will arise and will provide great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have told you in advance. 26 So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe them. 27 For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be."

The verses in Matthew seem to suggest that we will have no confusion whatever when the Son of God returns to the earth, that it will be like something as spectacular as watching lightning flash across the whole sky. When Christ makes his appearance at his return, there will be no doubt whatsoever that it is him appearing before us; Christ told us this when he walked on earth so that his sheep would not every have to worry about being deceived by charlatans.
