20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Here Peter is talking about Christ and his place in infinity, and driving home that Christ preceded the beginning of our world and will exist long after it is gone. He refers to the time of his writing, and thus the time of our reading his words as "these last times". It becomes clear through reading the references like this throughout the New Testament that Christ came here and made his great sacrifice so that we can be forgiven our sins and attain eternal life even in a time of such upheaval and conflict such as ours.
It may be because of population explosion and the great competition that we all face every day in trying to keep ourselves clothed, fed, and housed that causes us to face so many attacks on our spirit. We are constantly being tempted to deny that our behavior matters and to rationalize things away, sometimes on a minute to minute basis. For whatever reason about the age we live in, Christ and God felt that the situation became so dire that Jesus was sent here to face death and resurrection in order to give humanity the gift of Salvation from hell in the last days.
