9 For this reason also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
At this link, three quarters of the way down the page, Keith Giles writes that this verse in Greek uses a verb that should be translated a bit differently; he says that the translation should read that 'every knee will gladly bow' to Christ, as the full translation of the verb meaning is shortened. I have just started learning Greek myself, so I can't offer an opinion but it seems wonderful to think that everyone might see the glory of Christ on his return will bow down and worship him, and accept his offer of Salvation.
The verses use the future tense, pointing us to a time when everyone will see Christ in all his power and glory. Christ gave us the Great Commission to fulfill, asking each of his followers to show our love for our fellow humans by sharing our testimony in an effort to encourage others to accept Salvation from Christ. We know that at some point in the future Christ will return and take his church to heaven, and there is quite a lot of imagery in both the Gospels and the book of Revelation about how people who don't choose to follow Christ will be separated from God and cast into the hell that God created for the rebellious angels.
God and Christ give us free will, they don't force us to follow or to accept Christ's Salvation. We have to come to that decision on our own. Once when I was in addiction I saw the majesty of Christ, and I had a similar experience to what these verses talk about. I walked into the kitchen and saw the face of Christ surrounding my mother like a halo. Brilliant, glowing, shining like sunshine, though she was completely unaware of it. It took all my strength to remain standing, as my legs began to tremble like wobbly noodles. I leaned against the wall to hold myself up, transfixed by this golden vision of purity and love. I immediately thought of this verse, and I know that if everyone had the chance to see what I saw that day, they would accept Salvation from him too.
Biblical eschatology tells us over and over that we only have a certain amount of time to do this, until our physical life ends or when Christ returns for the church. Many interpretations suggest that people will accept Salvation during the Great Tribulation as well. But at some point, all our chances to choose to follow Christ and live for God will be over. I hope everyone will make the choice to accept Salvation.
